Story Behind the Song
I received the call on the morning of September 7th, 2002 that my grandfather had passed away after a long illness. I sat down at my computer to write out my thoughts and feelings in an email to be sent to my grandmother to offer her my prayers and feelings. After writing for some time, I paused and picked up my guitar. This song is the result of a sad email and a respect for my grandpa that runs deep. I hope this helps those of you dealing with a loss. God Bless you all.....
Lyrics
The Man
By: Phil Vandel
September 7, 2002
The man not lying there
Was always filled with joy, he was always a little boy inside,
The man not lying there
Deserved so much more, and it angers me that he would have to die,
So that all this pain and suffering could subside
The man not lying there
He was a friend of mine, and to everyone he knew along the way,
The man not lying there
Meant the world to me, though I didn't always show him, Lord I pray,
That I can be just like that man someday,
Chorus
Always love my family, be the man that I should be,
Take the time to stop and look around,
In this selfish world we live, I hope I don't forget to give,
To those that misfortune sadly found,
And when I draw my final breath I hope,
The one thing in this world that matters most,
I hope up in heaven you see,
God, and Grandpa, and Me,
The man not lying there
Really loved his wife, and he thanked God for his life every chance he could,
The man not lying there
Worked hard everyday, and he raised 7 kids through bad and good,
I could never fill the footprints where he stood,
The man not lying there
Is in a better place, and though I'll miss his face, that comforts me,
The man not lying there
Will be with me anywhere that I may go from sea to shinning sea,
There's no place in this world that he won't be.
There's a man not lying here,
He hasn't been here for a while, But we can't forget the teachings of his ways,
That man not lying here,
Died upon a cross, so that everyone could rest assured today,
That God above prepared a better place,
We can't forget to give thanks for his grace,
Repeat Chorus
In loving memory of Leon Shalz. Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, and Friend.
You will be greatly missed.
