Story Behind the Song
I guess this is a play on "E pluribus, Unum" as well as an allusion to 9-11, though it wasn't meant to be so political. Just one imaginary guy talking, really.
Lyrics
(Chant)
These are not reservation songs
These are our preservation songs
Not just people, prayin' for rain
But a people living over the pain
You know, you were coming to get us
You wanted to destroy us
Man, we never got
close to one
(Chant)
What the hell happened to the land you took
Full of bison and endless trees
All I see now is a modern playground
Land of strip malls and SUVs
You were coming to take this land
You were always gonna do this, man
We coulda got closer to one
(Chant)
Now don't worry, I'm a realist
I drink whiskey, drive a pick-up truck
Ain't gonna start no native revolution
But I get angry if I think too much
Feels, sometimes like you're still coming to get us
Ooh, like you wanna destroy us
Will we ever be
closer to one
(Chant)
These aren't just reservation songs
These are our preservation songs
Never thought you would ever need them
Now you know that we all need them
Now they're coming to get us ALL
Yeah want to destroy us all
You know, we better get
Closer to one
Closer to one
