Just when you thought you couldn't possibly get any more relaxed, you enter a time beyond time, a realm of suspended moments. Story Behind the Song
Almost a national anthem for all Mexicans. Like Sabor a Mi and Suavicito. This song has been played by every marachi on earth. Since I was a kid going to "El Torito, Alcapulco Restaurants", weddings, birthdays mariachi bands always played this song and on the chorus people would always jump in a sing
along. I never heard it done as a Jazz ballad so we might be able to say this is a
first. Imagine an accordian player in the alley and kids telling him to play
blues. It just so happen Volver is lyrically bluesy. Volver (to Return). In
Oxnard, California on the Boulevard. After I would go eat after a gig with The Estrada
Brothers. You'd almost always end up seeing a Mexican farmer drunk after work, just like in Santa Barbara's famous Carrows restaurant at 2am. The thing was is that sometimes I would witness the men crying as the marachi would play this song at their table. They sit there alone and tip money to the musicians. I imagine it's a cry for homesickness since the chorus means return. I
see a farm worker in Oxnard working in the fields and his family is still living in
Mexico. Like I said a blue tune. "I got the blues and someday I will return home...
