Story Behind the Song
The lyrics were written by an English lawyer named Frederic Edward Weatherly (1848-1929), who also wrote songs. The original music composed by him was not well received. He later was given the music for Londonderry Air and found that his lyrics were perfectly suited for it.
Lyrics
Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling
'tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or all the valley's hushed and white with snow
'tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.
But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
Then come and find the place where I am lying
And Kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.
And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And on my grave shall warmer sweeter be
If you will kneel and tell me that you love me
Then I will sleep in peace until you come to me.
