Story Behind the Song
At first I didn't want to craft this into a song, so, though it had some rhyme, it was a poem. While attending a Writing Retreat sponsored by the Marshall University Writing Project, I looked at it again and began to shape the lyric into a song. I woke up at 4 am and was singing it in an Appalachian ballad style for a couple hours. The next day, I sat down at the keyboard.....
Lyrics
9-1-1

V1
There’s nothing that will take the pain away
For those who knew the victims of that day
September eleven two thousand one
The day those evil deeds were done
V2
We suffer one and all for we have lost
Our innocence, our fearlessness, the cost
Of long believing those who hate us so
Were too small to strike with such a blow
B.
National security comes first
We must be prepared for the worst
And neutralize the few whose power grows
Spreading fear and lies through ‘holy’ wars
C.
Nine-one-one
Emergency
Care for the wounded
Mourn for the dead
Nine-one-one
Call to war
Hunt down the guilty
We want them dead
Alive or dead
V3
But let us not fall in their deadly trap
Intolerance and hate will only sap
Our strength to work for peace and carry on
When world respect for freedom’s dream is gone
Repeat B, C,
Coda:
We want them dead.
We want them dead.
How will it end?
Lord grant us peace.
