Story Behind the Song
IN 1985 I LIVED IN A 19TH CENTURY FARMHOUSE WITH 5 OTHER "YOUNG ADULT" BOARDERS. IT WAS HERE THE INNOCENCE OF YOUTH WAS SET ASIDE FOR THE FINER TEACHINGS OF LIFE... SEX, DRUGS, & ROCK-N-ROLL! THE 85 YEAR OLD WOMAN(CARRIE) WHO OWNED IT BY PROXY OF HER 2ND HUSBANDS DEMISE, WAS ANYTHING BUT ANGST-RIDDEN ABOUT THE COUP. SHE LOVED US AND OUR ZEST FOR LIFE FILLED HER WITH VIGOROUS YOUTH. WE LIVED, WE LOVED, WE LEARNED, AND OCCASIONALLY WE GOT DRUNK AND GOT ARRESTED! EVENTUALLY ALL THE KIDS WERE FORCED TO LEAVE DUE TO A LOCAL STATUTE ON SUB-LETTING LIMITS. CARRIE WAS FOUND DEAD ON HER FARM SHORTLY THERE AFTER. I BELIEVE THE SILENCE KILLED HER. THE SONG HAS MANY FORMS AND VERSIONS INSPIRED BY THE PEOPLE WHO LIVED AND GREW UP THERE. TRUE STORY
Lyrics
CARRIE'S FARM
WARREN FOUND AZALEAS OUT AT THE STAND,
OLD LADY CROUCHIN' WITH A SICKLE IN HER HAND,
GREY SKIES ABOVE, JUST KIDS IN LOVE,
FULL OF TEENAGE ENERGY,
WE ALL GOT LIT UP,
GET ALL YOU WANT ON CARRIE'S FARM
GET ALL YOUR FUN ON CARRIE'S FARM
I KNOW A GIRL WHO LIVES DOWNSTAIRS,
SHE GOT A SNAKE SLITHERIN' THRU HER HAIR,
MICE IN THE BIRD CAGE,
MIMO'S ON A JEALOUS RAGE,
EVERY TIME THAT WE GOT HIGH,
WE NEVER SAW IT'S FATE,
CHORUS
LIVIN' OFF THE LAND,
DEATH REACHED OUT IT'S HAND,
AND TOOK BELOVED CARRIE AWAY.....
NOW IT'S GONE, TORN TO THE GROUND,
IT'S SHAME OLD CARRIE WILL NEVER MAKE A SOUND
WHAT BECAME OF THE KIDS, ALL DISAPPEARED,
TOWNSHIP SAID NOW SHE'S DEAD,
LET'S PUT SOME HOUSES HERE.
CHORUS
