Words of wisdom from "Wee" Robbie Burns, Scotland's favorite son. From the year 1794 with the VBC: With modern words substituted for some of the archane Scottish terms Burns was so famous for.
    Credits: Burns/Chris Soldier

    Story Behind the Song
This song was around, as a "bawdy" diddy with sexually explicit lyrics, for at least 200 years before Burns picked it up and set his own words to it. It became very popular with the new lyrics. Burns explained in an interview that he wanted to express his contempt for the "rat race" of chasing after material possessions to the neglect of the things that make life worthwhile and fun.

    Lyrics
    1. There's not but care on ev'ry hand In ev'ry hour that passes-O! What signifies the life of man An' t'were not for the lasses-O! Chorus: Green grow the rushes-O! Green grow the rushes-O! The sweetest hours that e'er I spend Are spent among the lasses-O! 2. The worldly race may riches chase And riches still may fly them-O! And when at last they catch them fast Their hearts can ne'er enjoy them-O! 3. Give me a peaceful hour at e'en My arms about my dearie-O! And worldly men and worldly cares May all go topsy-turvy-O! Chorus: 4. For you so stern ye sneer at this You're not but sensless asses-O! The wisest man the world has saw He dearly loved the lasses-O! 5. Old Nature swears the lovely dears Her noblest work she classes-O! Her 'prentice hand she tried on man And then she made the lasses-O! Chorus:(twice)
