    Story Behind the Song
Somewhere, if I ever settle long enough to unpack, is a copy of the original sheet music of this song. It was written in the 1800's by Edward Connaghan of Derry, as part of a six-piece cantata. My grandmother Martha McGuinness first taught me this song, as I stood beside her (wilting) at the old Chappell upright piano! My sister Anne Molloy, inherited the piano and the talent with which to play it. I told Granny that one day I would record this song and dedicate it to her. Unfortunately, I waited so long I forgot the third verse and if I am to be totally honest can barely reach those top notes! Dedicated with love, for her enduring gift of music to my Grandmother, Martha Mc Guinness nee Mc Daid
(Principal of St.Patrick's Primary School, Pennyburn, Derry and my first music teacher).

    Lyrics
    Oh sing me the songs
That my heart loves the dearest
    The songs that in Erin
    I heard long ago
When I strayed with my friends
    Who were kindest and dearest
    beside where the Mourne
    And the Foyle water's flow

    Chorus:
    'Twill gladden my heart
And I'll think I am roaming
    The sunny green valleys
    Of Erin among
By the Finn and the Foyle
    In the summer day gloamin'
When I first heard the strains
    Of and old Irish song

    Ah come here dear Nora
    Your spinning give over
    My fond heart is weary
    With sorrow and toil
    And sing me the songs
You once sang to your lover
    As we wandered alone
By the Banks of the Foyle

    Chorus:
    Ah sing it again
    I could listen forever
    And sit here in silence
    The summer day long
    For my memory flies back
    To the Foyle's lovely river
When I first heard the strains
    Of an old Irish song

    Last Chorus:
    "Ah Sing it again......
    For oh there is something
    So sweet and divine
    In the spirit that breathes
    Through and old Irish song"
