Story Behind the Song
"California Son" was written over the course of several months. The melody and structure existed before most of the lyric. This song took several weeks to record; mainly beacause of equipment failure (the joy of budget recording). We went for a vety specific sound and feeling. We wanted it to sound out of time. Meaning it doesn't belong to any specific point in time. Most great songs transcend time anyway. Doesn't matter when they come from. It tries to tell the story of a man who has forgotten where he came from. How he deals with the demons of his past. It's mainly a story about being able to accept where you come from and being thankfull for where you are.
Lyrics
you step outside and close your eyes
against a technicolor disney afternoon
the haze is rising over the hollywood sign
reminds you of a distant song you knew the words to
the lyrics are fading but you still remember the tune
a piece of the history you never thought you would live through
my god if people only knew
chorus: when you were young you spent your days beneath the california sun
never a care, never aware you were a california son
another perfect family album
the only wish in life you ever had come true
a perfect dream for you to build on
watching rhonda sleeping softly in her room
the dreams of a brother, a dream spinning out of control
one more for the father, a man who put his life on hold
and finally it took it's toll
chorus: when you were young you spent your days beneath the california sun
never a care, never aware you were a california son
bridge: you never were the strong one, always depending on someone
always reminded of the family who had hung their hopes on you
and now you open up your eyes
another picture-perfect sunday afternoon
the sun is setting over
the hollywood sky
the day is ending and there's still so much to do
just when the music is ending do you understand
sombody whispers and tells you it's alright and then
you're caught up in the dream again
chorus: whenyou were young you spent your days beneath the california sun
never a care, never aware you were a california son
won't last forever, it's kinda sad
won't last forever, it's kinda sad
