Story Behind the Song
The story behind the song is the Good Samaritan parable that Jesus told. This is taken from the perspective of the traveler who was beat up, and left for dead. The irony is that the priest and levite would not stop to help their jewish brother, but a Samaritian (half Jewish and half Philistine but hated by both) was the one to stop and help him. The title good Samaritian would be a joke itself to the Jewish listener at that time. No Samaritian was good. Jesus was pushing the walls of the people's preconcived notions in order to answer the question "Who is my neighbor". I am afraid that some people, unfortunately, will listen to only the first part of the song and think I am being racist. But much like Jesus' parables you have to listen to the whole story before you get the true meaning. You dig? Word to the mother I'm a bad brother. Talking about mothers... Mom please forgive me for the line about "...kicked Butt..." I know we don't talk like that
Lyrics
The road ahead seems rugged, the path is getting steep,
My strength is gone Im stumbling over my on feet
I fall to my knees Im dizzy and fainting
Im worse than that I start to hallucinating
The Lord appears right before me in a haze
Reaches his hand to me and begins to say
Lean on me...
When you need someone to help
I wont turn my back Ill offer you myself
Lean on me
And realize its true
Youre leaning on me and Im leaning on you
I said Lord did you see what happened to me
Got jumped by two foreigners or was it three
The beat me and robbed me for my dough
I gave them all I had, but thy still beat me some mo
Left me here on road for dead
With a bloody nose, broken arm, kicked butt, and smashed head
That was bad enough, but its not the worst
The preacher walked by from the local Christian church
Help me please I cried
But without another glance he walk pass me on the other side
Im hear all alone and I need help desperately
The Lord reached out his hand and said to me
Lean on me...
When you need someone to help
I wont turn my back Ill offer you myself
Lean on me
And realize its true
Youre leaning on me and Im leaning on you
Lord I feel no one cares if I live or die
A deacon passed me but was death to my cries
I think Im in shock I wont last
Wait another coming up the road. Will help? Should I ask?
NO. Hes a foreigner, the wrong color
He might even be one of the robbers they all look like each other.
Im guard as he comes this way
But he reaches out his hand to me and says
Lean on me...
When you need someone to help
I wont turn my back Ill offer you myself
Lean on me
And realize its true
Youre leaning on me and Im leaning on you
Lord cant believe this Samaritans behavior
He helped me when my people wouldnt. Now whos my neighbor
But I learned another lesson still
While were leaning on you, youre leaning on us to do your will
We are your arms we are your hands
When someones in need we need to take a stand
No matter the race, or the color
Were all made in your image and we are all brothers.
So Lord Im leaning on you where ever I go
And Lord theres one thing I want you to know. (you can)
Lean on me...
When you need someone to help
I wont turn my back Ill offer you myself
Lean on me
And realize its true
Youre leaning on me and Im leaning on you
