Lyrics
Johann Heinrich Schmelzer (c. 1620-80) was according to contemporary sources one of the best violin players in Europe. He may have been a student of Bertali. Schmelzer was working in Vienna and had a set of twelve sonatas printed in Nürnberg in 1659, from which the three sonatas on this recording are taken. In his sonatas, Schmelzer is integrating virtuosic elements without rupturing the overall balance of the composition. In 1658, Schmelzer was in Frankfurt to preform at the crowning of Leopold I, where he should have got to know Philipp Friedrich Buchner.
