Story Behind the Song
"Double Jeopardy" was written after a long period of writers block.
We had been playing a lot and rarely had time to rehearse and jam.
Cesareo,
Mento's original drummer was back in the line-up and had come up with tons of new song ideas.
Unlike many drummers,
Cesareo can also play a little guitar and keyboard.
It only took one play on Caleb's acoustic guitar to get the song started.
After the song took form,
Matt put lyrics to the song.
The lyrics reflect two things occurring at the time:
a relationship gone bad,
and a former band member with too much "left-wing" politics and court appearances in his life.
After both had left,
it was time to reflect.
Scott suggested the title "Double Jeopardy" after the legal term.
It basically means,
No person ( shall ) ... be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb ...
Fifth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
We debuted the song in it's early stage at the "Ska Against Racism" show in Irvine, CA in '98.
The kids seemed to dig it,
so we went home and fine tuned it.
Our engineer / musician extraordinaire Nick Forcillo performed and recorded the guitar solo at the end.
Lyrics
Time and time again I always wonder,
can your hostility be shaken just like thunder,
You point you finger
and you rant about your latest tirade
If I may,
if I might,
anarchy is your theme tonight,
screaming here,
fighting there,
creeping just like underwear,
Is there anybody to compete with your outrageous masquerade,
(chorus)
You're getting mad about it,
you're getting loud about,
you always pout about it,
you're feeling proud,
I doubt it
[Searching for things that aren't easy to find,
just calm your anger before you go blind]
Totally erratic,
always contradicting issues,
this world will drive you crazy if you always figure,
that if you're logical,
you always end up getting your way
Do you ever think that maybe if I was to follow,
your road to freedom,
paved with true lies,
rage and sorrow,
my life would only be a factor,
as I throw my life away
(chorus)
Realize it,
don't criticize it,
moralize,
don't sterilize it...
horn solo
(chorus)
Time is all we have,
don't stand in our way(4x)
guitar solo out.....
Yeah yeah,
sweet reggae,
Mento Buru,
give it to you,
lively,
lively,
with lively,
stylee,
feel alright.......
