Story Behind the Song
Steve Sisgold grew up in the 1950's in a tight Jewish community. Steve remembered his childhood innocence shattered one day when he noticed, and inquired about, a Holocaust survivor's brand. From that moment on, he'd been haunted by the Holocaust and how it changed what it means and has meant, to be a Jew. As an adult, he decided to travel to Germany and Poland to face his trauma in the places where they began. He hired a film crew and began his journey.
In the summer of 1998 I got a call from Haydn Riess of Magnolia Films. We'd worked together on a commercial some time before and shared some socio-ecological-political beliefs. He'd heard a demo of ours and thought our moody, atmospheric approach to music might be perfect for a new project he was editing. Time and money were running out and Haydn's vision was contrasting with Steve Sisgold's vision and it was in the last 2 weeks of they're partnership that I got involved.
I was a combination of excited to be involved in writing for such a powerful subject, daunted by how sensitive the material was and afraid of feelings I didn't want to face. Haydn Reiss and Andy Gersh from Magnolia Films, were editing every day and sending me home with new rough edits. I would work late into the evening, return in the morning before work with a rough mix of my own, stop back in the evening for another rough edit tape, and repeat the cycle. This went on for, as I said, 2 exhausting weeks.
The images of Auschwitz and particularly Birkenau began to haunt my dreams and dominate my waking mind as I began researching the subject in ernest in an attempt to really do the project justice. I chose cold, unforgiving synth textures and guitar tunings, blending cold mechanical sounding loops with traditional sounding acoustic instruments. Often I would write something to satisfy a request of Haydn's, only to discover the following evening that the music in combination with the stark imagery, was simply over powering. I tried to imply and convey the emotional impact without enhancing it. It was so very important to let Steve Sisgold's own powerful journey speak for itself.
Ultimately, I ended up writing over 40 minutes of music, half of which was rejected, in just 2 weeks. Only pieces of Breathe Memoria were included in the final edit and it wasn't until a chance meeting with Steve Sisgold himself that he was able to hear it for himself.
This project changed the way I view music and art. It helped me discover the courage within myself to begin asking the hard questions and looking into my own darkness for a path back out into the light.
I'm adding it to Isochr0nology because it deserves to be heard.
