    Story Behind the Song
This song goes way back. It started as a riff and a chorus I had when I was with The Bystanders (mp3.com/bystanders) ... I made up some verse lyrics and my friend Robert later transcribed them for me. I ended up ditching almost everything but the first verse and re-writing it this spring for inclusion on the Sore Losers' CD. My main problem was that I didn't know what the song was "about" until I finally hit on the idea of writing it from the point of view of someone else. Someone I knew was going through the pain of making a hard decision about her life, deciding whether to stay with someone she loved who couldn't/wouldn't commit, or just break it off and start over. That helped me re-focus the lyric when I thought about her (maybe) being the narrator. I don't have a lot of experience in writing from points of view other than my own (when I've tried in the past, story songs, etc., it's felt somehow false), but this one really seemed to work in that context. Having Vanessa, Ron and Megan playing with us on this cut really makes it for me, though. Live it's hard to play now because we all hear their parts in our heads.

    Lyrics
You built a wall so high
    I can’t get over
Can’t cross over ‘cause it’s too high
Is there some secret I haven’t discovered
Some mystery potion to make me fly
I’m not your savior, save it for later
If you’ve got a problem with my
Doubts – cause we all have our doubts

    I'm not satisfied
    Am I supposed to be?

    Lost my faith
    Depended on grace
Maybe it showed up a little too late
    You were leaving
Just in time to set me on fire
You say that you got to go
If you got to go, then go
    But I can’t wait anymore

    I'm not satisfied
    Am I supposed to be?

    It’s another bent nail
    Another forced lock
If I could turn the time back on the clocks
    I swear I’d never
    Make this same mistake again
You say you don’t want to be alone
    Nobody wants to be lonely
But there are worse things than being alone

    I'm not satisfied
    Am I supposed to be?
