Story Behind the Song
I have long seemed to resonate with African people and the oppressed and poor of the world in general. I grew up in wealthy family and as a child I felt the hypocrisy and exclusivity of my parents' world, and was drawn like my brother to immigrants and working class people. They were real, and happy, and all the money we had just put us in a shell, a strange artificial game, that hid shame and cruelty under a false sophistication. I have loved black music, jazz and rhythm and blues, since childhood. Though I do get hurt again and again I will keep fighting for what I believe, that God is good. I cannot fault my parents, they were good people who came as far as they could from their own background. Money does strange things to people. Some of the
richest people in the world are the craziest, money crazy. Poor people can be
money crazy too, of course. Sometimes insanity is the only game in town, and
if you have to make a living, or you want to stay in society, you may have to run in the rat race. Oh well. You don't have to think like a rat.
