    Story Behind the Song
This song was written with the two-line ending of each verse as its start-point, a couplet invented when trying chord-shapes on a modally tuned six-course cittern. As usual, these accidentally sung lines dictated exactly what the whole song should be, and from there it was a matter of following the structure of traditional lyrics.

The instrument is a recently made six-course (12 string) short scale cittern by Canadian luthier Peter Cox. It is strung with custom weight nickel wound strings, tuned GCDgcd.

    Lyrics
If I could love you more
    © David Kilpatrick August 2002

It's often that my lady asks
Why love so far must stray
Why men can never constant be
But seek new tunes to play
Each time I give my answer
    As oft I've done before
Oh I might love you better
If I could love you more

If in our bed you turn away
    And face unto the wall
Should I yet lie cold there
    When warmer pleasures call?
It's then I quit your silken sheets
    To lie on Sally's straw
Oh I might love you better
If I could love you more

    Happy is the sailor
    Returning to Leith Shore
    The pretty maids around him
    And silver in good store
But my poor boat you cast adrift
    And lock your chamber door
Oh I might love you better
If I could love you more

    Happy is the soldier
Who lists to serve the King
For he may have one wife at home
And ten to march with him
I think I'll take the shilling
And ride off to the war
Oh I might love you better
If I could love you more

It's often that I tell her
I'd love her with my life
If I could but persuade her
    To be a constant wife
And constantly to seek my love
    Which now she does ignore
Oh I might love her better
If she'd let me love her more!
