A song about being in a wrong place with a totally wrong person, about guilt-ridden lust. |

Story Behind the Song
The idea and the minimalistic chord secquence come from the music we did to a theatre performance of Youkio Mishimaā€™s ā€¯Madame de Sadeā€¯ with percussionist Aleksi Oksanen back in 1998. This is from the scene where Mme de Sadeā€™s sister recalls the holiday she spent in Venice - with her own sisterā€™s husband. Iā€™ve always felt thereā€™s a song - a story - here, but it seemed to take its time to come. Finally I wrote this version of the lyrics in June 2002, and (as usual) when I had the complete lyrics, the rest came quite easily.
Recording prosess happende during July 2002. As usual, I did a sort of scetch with the Band in a Box, using only the percussion (and the barely audible drone tone) in the final mix, replacing tracks as the recording progressed. After awhile, I ended up with a version I thought was more or less final, just short of a few tweaks for the mixdown. Listening the mix a bit later I decided the bass line didnā€™t work (notewise and soundwise) so I had to record a new one, which seems to give the track a sort of Jah Wobble vibe. The vocal seemed to be a bit off, so I used a pitch correction program (RBC Voice Tweaker) to make it sit better with the song. The sam program allowed me to ā€¯change the genderā€¯ of the backup vocals.

Lyrics
(rough translation:)
Red Moon
By the square embracing the pillars
Far away from the sun
We hide from the people, hide from their eyes
weā€™ll search a quiet route
Weeks in a small hot room
Behind securing bolts
Only at nighttime we open the window
we see the red moon
Both of usā€™s friends think weā€™re elsewhere
No postcards to mail
We search for some comfort from fingers
to touch only the skin
No more talking, no hesitant words
the words are a way to hurt
Only at night time we open the window
we see the red moon
(Chorus:)
The cruel red moon
lightens the room
lightens the sheets
Dreams of the insane
crushes in pale
liver coloured sheen.
This step we have taken, weā€™ve done what weā€™ve done
no way to rescue the past
Away from the light, away from the looks
no past no future
Mouth saying something, skin wanting something other
craving for sweaty flesh
The soiled sheets, behind the window
liver coloured moon
(Repeat chorus)
Some weeks, is this worth something?
nothing is left
The smelly canals, walls peeling paint
no life, no holiday
In this sweaty room where sticky bodies
search for their dreams
Nothing in this trip to remember
nothing but the red moon
(repeat chorus)
