Story Behind the Song
California Dreams was written to tell the story of one man's experience in a small East Coast town, it talks about all the reasons he left...and the way he feels when he returns to visit. It was written in about 15 minutes, and recorded in a few sessions at Denark Productions in Halifax, N.S., Canada.
Lyrics
California Dreams
Plane touched down on the east coast,
I got out and I kissed the ground,
Turned my collar to the rain that was pouring down.
All my friends came too meet me,
They're still home working at the mill,
Bobby's gone he's out fishing,
Dave's been and gone, he's on pogey still
Do you wanna see me go away?
Do you wanna see me leave?
Small town, bringdown, rain is pouring down, weaving California dreams,
Small town, bringdown, rain is pouring down, weaving California dreams.
Dad says I should come back,
factories buildin', more union jobs to come,
But at the tavern Dave's drinkin',
yeah he's been thinkin', that it's time for him to run.
Do you wanna see me...
Smalltown...
Saw my old high school sweetheart,
She's got three kids, she's on welfare now.
Her current beau's out of prison,
But he's got addictions, he'll be back there somehow.
Our prom queen is a waitress,
And the mayors been there for twenty years,
But on the street they still know me....
"Hair's a little grey, but that's the same ring danglin' from my ear."
and rain is pouring down,
yeah rain is pouring down,
and rain is pouring down and pouring down and pouring down and pouring...yeah
