The child star sings to herself in a poignant moment of reflection as she longs for a life without the trappings of fame.
    CD: Handlennium   Label: n/a
Credits: Words by Ben Dixon, Music by Stephen Froggatt; Sophie King (aged 10) vocals, Stephen Froggatt piano

    Story Behind the Song
Ben Dixon wrote the school play "All At Sea" which had a character on the cruise who was a child celebrity. Ben thought she should have a song to sing about the life of fame being not all perfect - about a lost childhood perhaps. I soon had the theme for the phrase "Please realise that I'm just a girl" - and the reast of the music really wrote itself after that.
This was recorded in a single take one school breaktime in the music room, because Sophie was rather busy. We didn't even have the words or music available! All we had was a minidisc recorder and one mike, but we gave it our best shot!
I remember this being a real tear-jerker with the cast - Sophie always sang it beautifully. Backstage all the other girls would look on at Sophie in the spotlight and quietly mouth the words she was singing...

    Lyrics
If I could have my time again
    I’d have my time alone
The people who have made my name
    Put spotlights on my home.

Please realise that I’m just a girl:
I want my own life too.

The ones that I admire the most
    Are those without a name
That clean the floor or bring the post
And have no claim to fame.

Please realise that I’m just a girl:
I want my own life too.

    The public love to criticise
    The millions that I’m worth
    But underneath the riches
Lies the poorest girl on Earth.

Please realise that I’m just a girl:
I want my own life too.

I want my own life too.
