Lyrics
The Nine Ladies Of Stanton Moor
Thousands of years ago on Stanton Moor
Bronze Age People worshipped some more.
They erected the Nine Ladies, a ring of nine stones
at a beautiful site where they’d bury their bones.
Then not so long ago, back in ’52
they said to the quarrymen “Do what you need to!”
They gave permission to dig for stone
In Lee’s Cross and Endcliffe, near the Nine Ladies’ home.
Well for years they lay ‘dormant’, half a century had passed.
In ’95, they tried to close them with a new law at last!
But it seems the companies don’t need a way round
as the permission from ’52 could still be the way…
to get the stone from the ground.
The Warriors are camping up on the moor.
They know what to do, they’ve been there before.
The locals are angry, petition and meet.
They don’t want the lorries and dust up their street.
Tourism’s threatened and the ecologists fear
for the water, the fauna, the badgers and deer.
How can they ever consider getting the stone
from a quarry in the Nine Ladies’ home?
I know what you’re asking, why do I care?
Well a long time ago my granddad was born there!
Although my granddad might have worked for that firm
He’d turn in his grave if he got to learn
Of the plans they have for Stanton Moor
A beautiful place, where we’d used to go
For walks on our holidays, a home from home.
The home to the Nine Ladies of stone.
So come on and treat a 50 year old sore.
It’s not a case of breaking the law!
All we need is some sense to prevail
To prevent this ship from ever setting sail.
Quarrymen and planners do you lose sleep at night?
What do you think gives you the right
To take the stone for 40 years more,
from the Nine Ladies, from the Nine Ladies at Stanton Moor.
The Stanton Moor protest is a battle to save the ancient from destruction by the modern.
