Story Behind the Song
I grew up in churches where there was always an altar call at the end of the sermon. There were certain recurring themes in what was said. I have tried to include as many as possible.
Lyrics
Before I give the benediction,
I know it's late, but please don't leave,
If you should find your life was over,
Where would you spend eternity?
A lake of fire,
Or streets of gold,
Suffering,
Or joy untold awaits,
We'll sing the chorus,
One more time,
Bow your heads,
And close your eyes,
He wants to meet you at the altar...
I knew a kid fresh out of high school,
He said he had a lot of time,
He loved the world and all its pleasures,
He liked his money, girls and wine,
He got messed up,
On New Year's Eve,
Wrapped his car around a tree and died,
The time is now,
You know it's right,
You might not make it home tonight,
He wants to meet you at the altar...
I feel there's someone holding back now,
You want to come but your afraid,
Don't worry what your neighbor's thinking,
Come forward now so we can pray,
Or maybe it's too hard to take,
Perhaps you think,
It's all a fake...ok,
There's just one thing,
I'll ask of you,
What would you do,
If it were true,
He wants to meet you at the altar...
