Haul Away Joe is a sailors working song. (The usual task this song was meant for was to raise the sails). Sailors of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Canada, America, etc. would have had at least a dozen working melodies, some a bit saltier than others (usually working songs were quite bawdy, very descriptive and creative). Most songs added verses as they went along to suit their own crew.
This particular combination of lyrics is very popular among Contemporary Celtic Groups and was one of the few working sailor songs that were published on broad sheets and sung in the port of New Orleans as far back as 1825. Some of the songs that were tame enough to sing in a busy port on the docks, (where ladies may have been present) included - Drunken Sailor, Blow the Man Down, Jump Down, Turn around, Sally Brown and Boney Jean Francois.
Sailing Men proclaimed that singing made the work go faster. Sailing men of the 15th - 19th centuries had a very deep respect for superstitions regarding their safety when at sea. It seems that Sailors held the belief that it was terribly bad luck to have a woman on a ship, but it was particularly good luck to sing about women in very colorful, salty, and rather rude, (blue) ballads.
Lyrics
Haul Away Joe
When I was a Little Boy
So my mother told me, Timmy
Weigh, haul away, We'll haul away-Joe
That, if I did not kiss the girls
My lips would all grow moldy, Timmy
Weigh, haul away, We'll haul away-Joe
Chorus:
Weigh! Haul away! The Good Ship now is rollin- Timmy!
Weigh! Haul away! We'll haul away-Joe
Weigh! Haul away! Were bound for better weather - Timmy!
Weigh! Haul away! We'll haul away-Joe!
Saint Patrick he was Irelands saint
He came from decent people
Weigh, haul away, We'll haul away - Joe
In Dublin Town, they built his church
And on it put a steeple.
Weigh, haul away! We'll haul away - Joe
Chorus
First I met a Yankee Girl,
And she was Fat and Lazy, Timmy
Weigh, haul away! We'll haul away - Joe
Then I met an Irish Girl,
She damn near drove me crazy, Timmy
Weigh, haul away! We'll haul away - Joe
Chorus
King Louie was the King of France
Before the Rev- o - loo - shy - un
Weigh, haul away, We'll haul away - Joe
Then he got his head cut off
It spoiled his con - stih - too - shy - un.
Weigh, haul away! We'll haul away - Joe
Chorus
And up she flew!
