Story Behind the Song
Many young children are fascinated by the work of firefighters. When faced by a firefighter in full turn-out gear, however, the can quickly become frightened. This song was written to introduce the firefighter's special clothing to the children in stages, while explaining why the gear is so important. Smoke can hurt everyone; a firefighter must wear special clothes to stay safe. This song was written in 1991 and I have used it in many of my classes since its inception. Easily performed on acoustic guitar only, it adapted very well to a reggae beat. Once I programmed the drum patterns and keyboard sequences, this song fell together nicely in the studio.
Lyrics
Hey, Hey Firefighter
A call comes in to the fire house;
there's a house on fire
They need the firefighters right away;
the flames are getting higher.
Ring, ring, goes the bell,
watch the firefighters run.
Before they can fight the fire,
something must be done.
The firefighter grabs his fire gear,
it helps keep him safe.
When there's a fire he puts it on.
Hurry, now, don't be late.
Flash, flash, go the lights;
the fire truck is on the road.
The horn blows and the siren yells,
watch that firetruck go.
The firefighter has on special clothes
Let's see if we know why...
When there's a fire, he puts them on,
when you see him please don't cry.
Hey, hey firefighter,
you don't look the same,
but I won't be afraid,
I know why you came.
Now they've put the fire out,
they put away the hose.
Everyone gets back on the truck,
now it's time to go.
Hey, hey, firefighter
There's a fire call.
Boots and pants,
Coat and gloves.
Wait, that's not all.
Don't forget your air mask
and a helmet for your head.
Now you can go to the fire
in your fire truck big and red.
Hey, hey firefighter,
you don't look the same,
but I won't be afraid,
I know why you came.
