Story Behind the Song
What's that round thing on the ceiling? Why is it there? Why did it make all that noise when you pushed the button? The smoke detector is a life protector, of course! It keeps you safe when you're asleep.
An acoustic guitar song that was written for a children's cable television show. Recorded in many takes until I felt the balance of instruments was appropriate for the "feel" of the song. Many hours spent to fine tune this song. It still has a folk feel, I believe based on the fundamental acoustic guitar pattern I used when writing the tune.
Lyrics
Smoke Detector, Life Protector
Waiting in the hall
on the ceiling or the wall
is a friend I can't live without.
He stays wide awake while I sleep tight
and if there's smoke he wakes me up tonight.
My smoke detector is a life protector
It knows just what to do.
If a fire breaks out in the house
it'll wake me up, I have no doubt!
Once each month I test my detector
I wanna be sure that it works okay
And, if I find the batteries low
I put a new one in right away.
And when it yells, I wake right up
and get down on the floor.
I don't stand I stay under smoke
and crawl my way right out the door
My smoke detector is a life protector
It knows just what to do.
If a fire breaks out in the house
it'll wake me up, I have no doubt!
When the smoke detector beeps
gotta get on the floor
When the smoke detector beeps
gotta get out the door
[repeat]
