Story Behind the Song
This song was written for inclusion into a puppet production about fire and life safety. This upbeat, swing tempo tune has delighted many children as they learn that they can and do have responsibility for their own safety. This was a "brainstorm" tune that started as a "catch phrase" and became a full-fledged song. Once the melody hit me, I couldn't stop production on this tune until it was finished.
Lyrics
Personal Responsibility
by Rich Palmer
Let me tell you a story
I believe its true
About a kid that’s a lot like you
He plays around the house
And has lots of fun
He plays in his yard
Where he jumps and runs
But here’s some advice
That’s important to know
When you’re playing you should still
Watch where you go.
‘Cause things around there
that can hurt you
So listen up close
And you’ll know what to do
CHORUS
Personal Responsibility
Where you can keep yourself safe as can be…
Just look around and see what you can see
‘cause when you’re safe you know that you are happy.
Are there toys on the stairs?
Well get them off of there!
You might fall down, and hurt you’re "you know where!"
Watch out in the kitchen where there’s things that are hot!
And when you ride your bike, look for a safe spot.
Well, think it through, here’s a good idea,
Put a helmet on your head, keep it safe my dear.
It’s not too hard for you to do,
Be safe, you know it’s up to you.
REPEAT CHORUS
