Story Behind the Song
This is a song written by my brother, John Keisling, as a patriotic salute to America's strength in the face of the 9-11 attacks. It's a very emotional and moving piece. It starts out with the shock and horror we all felt when it happened, and builds through our determination to end with a ringing declaration of faith in God and in America. John produced the recording, which was engineered in North Carolina by Dave Moody of the Moody Brothers. We're donating all profits from sales of the CD-single to the families of those who were killed because of the attacks, including the rescue workers and our armed forces. We also want as many people as possible to hear the song, because we want it to inspire them and lift them up!
Here's what John says about the song:
On the morning when I wrote "Freedom's Holy Light," all of my thoughts were on writing a song that would be a tribute to America's strength in the face of evil. I scarcely could have imagined the path that would follow, or how, with the aid of family and friends, the idea would blossom from a few notes on paper into a full-fledged recording, with the potential to inspire us all and send some help to those who were most devastated by the attacks. I believe that story is itself testimony to what the American spirit makes possible.
First, some background. My father is a retired U.S. Army Ranger, Vietnam veteran and Green Beret with 22 years in the service. He and my mother have been married for over 30 years. They reared me and my two younger sisters to be patriotic, freedom-loving Americans, with a firm understanding of the sacrifices and heroism that made our freedom possible. Living in Panama, a military dictatorship, for eight years taught us very clearly what life is like without that freedom.
As President Bush so rightly pointed out, the September 11th bombings were an attack on that very freedom. My first reaction, after the initial shock, was the fear that God had turned His back on us, that all the poison of those who hate traditional moral virtue, those who would ban God from public life, and those who fight only to normalize depravity, had already ruined the country I loved so much. But when I saw the heroism of the New York firemen and cops and rescue workers, the steely resolve of Todd Beamer and the fighters on Flight 93, the immediate resurgence of patriotism, courage, toughness, manliness, and above all godliness, I knew I had been wrong, and that America will fight to the ends of the earth, destroy her enemies wherever they may hide, and win this war.
It was that progession, from shock and sorrow to gathering resolve to triumph, that I wanted to express in my song. The inspiration for it came pretty much out of the blue. I was on my way to work when the idea suddenly crystallized, and I turned around, went home, took the morning off, and wrote the music and lyrics in about five hours. I'd written poetry and lyrics before, but never any music until then.
What's happened since then has been so remarkable that I'm convinced the Lord had His hand in it, as I've prayed that He would from the beginning. I wanted my sister Anna, just starting her singing career in Austin, to record the vocals, but I didn't know where to find a band. My mother had the idea of asking my uncle Dave (her brother) about it, since he was a professional musician for several years. He's a successful businessman now, but is still an expert drummer and plays in a band for fun. It turned out that he knows David Moody of the Moody Brothers, who has two Grammy nominations and has his own studio near my uncle's home in North Carolina. David loved the song and wanted to record it there. The result was that Anna, my mother, and I flew to North Carolina and recorded the song with my uncle, some of his band members, and some other excellent musicians David knew. We started each session with a prayer that the Lord would inspire each of us to do his best and bring forth the true meaning in the music, and it was amazing how quickly the song came together. Once it was recorded, I got together with a friend, Brent Gerity, who's a professional photographer with his own digital darkroom, and created the CD cover, using my parents' old flag and a photo of Anna taken by my uncle on my father's side. The whole process took only six weeks, which I still find hard to believe.
Our hope now is to get the song out to where it can do good for the country, and that it will inspire Americans to stand united, turn back to God, and find the strength to win this war. In that spirit, I thank you for taking an interest, and I hope you enjoy the song.
Lyrics
It was just another morning
No one had a warning
In the land of freedom free we woke
And started up our day
But evil men were waiting
For years sustained by hating
They climbed aboard our airplanes
And they ripped our peace away
And we cried, and we prayed
And we grieved as one that day
And we pleaded with the Lord above
To help us find our way
We were stunned, we were lost
And we couldn't bear the cost
And we asked ourselves if freedom's light
Could live another day
The eleventh of September
I always will remember
The pictures ran again and again
That no one could believe
But as the days unfolded
A new resolve was molded
We lit our candles and we flew our flags
And began again to breathe
And we worked, and we prayed
And we rallied day by day
And we gave to help the rescuers
And armed ourselves for the fray
Though we grieved for the lost
And could hardly bear the cost
We united then to fight the war
And we prayed we'd win the day
And oh, it inspired us to know
That through all the darkness and fear
God's light in a billion hearts shone bright
Our embassies rang with their cheers
The heroes on flight 93
The heroes of NYPD
When evil struck, they gave their all
And that courage helps us see
That they may have smashed our towers
But they'll never smash our hearts
And when the firemen raised our flag, I knew
Our strength would never die
And we'll sing, and we'll pray
And we'll stand as one today
And we'll keep our faith in God above
To lead us in His way
In the names of those lost
No matter what the cost
We will lead the world with freedom's light
Forever and a day
Forever and a day
