Song based upon one's struggle with the demons of addiction. Based on the life and death of Layne Staley.
CD: Beneath the Surface   Label: Independant

    Story Behind the Song
Primary riffs were written after doing some experimentation with dirty/clean dynamics in drop d tunings. With the Alice in Chains inspired heavy riff, it was the perfect opportunity to take a hard look at the Seattle scene of the early 1990s and the drug related casualties associated with it. Specifically of note was the recent death of Layne Staley that brought this topic to the forefront again. This song came together very quickly, the riffs were written in one day, the band arranged the song the following weekend, and lyrics were written and added the following week. This take is a an unmastered demo and recorded in a home studio over the course of a few weeks.

    Lyrics
    Black Circles

    Verse 1
    In the evening I awake
My soul is tired and more I cannot take
Days are night and night is day
For years now I have been away
    Curtains closed, doors are locked
A ghost of me will never stop
Abandoned hope with each futile try
Wishing I could turn back the hands of time

    Verse 2
My spirit pains and will not heal
    Bleeding life a wound I can’t congeal
Looming darkness in which there is no light
Yet I see the end is nearing of this fight
No time waste my needs habitual
One last time this godless ritual
Behind is left a lifeless weary self
Nobody cared until it was too late for help

    Chorus
Black circles below my feet and eyes
Needle in the sky and now we say goodbye
Even hell’s a better place to reside
Feeling better dead than when I was alive

    Verse 3
One by one the mourners pass me by
All that’s real has seemed to fall aside
As a flower wilted by the cold
God has taken back my tortured soul
Comfort seems a false and distant hope
It’s useless seeking my own way to cope
Feeling better dead than I felt alive
Wishing I could turn back the hands of time
