Story Behind the Song
This song came to me as I was driving over the new Boston Bridge. I sung it all the way home and wrote the song as I was driving - which was incidentally, very dangerous.
All of a sudden Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravits both had their own "Fly Away" so I put this on the shelf.

Fly Away

There we were we never knew
How close we were to see the truth
Were we happy? We were then
If you could call that happiness
All the things we never had
Didn't matter when you laugh
But I had never realized
How bad it was, I’m still surprised
Can I do this on my own?
You always said make fear your own
Tear it down and build again
But all my friends keep jumping in
Today my dream became a light
Ascend the stairs up from the night
Can future be without a past?
I ask myself afraid to ask
And Fly Away, Fly Away
Fly Away, Fly Away
I’ll Fly…Bye, Bye, Bye
Fly!
If we could have it, everything
And anything the poet sings
Everywhere a painter sees
Every dream a dreamer dreams
Every love a lover holds
Everything a scholar knows
Any prayer a sinner prays
Every night and every day
Here we are a mountain tall
But so afraid if we should fall
In the rain with open eyes
Somehow they never felt so dry
How poor I was to never see
What held me down was only me
You ran behind and took my fate
I turned around and watched you say
Fly Away, Fly Away
Fly Away, Fly Away
I’ll Fly…Bye, Bye, Bye
Fly!
Fly Away, Fly Away
