Story Behind the Song
The first part of this song was written way after The Child Song was written. And yet... was written in 1989 and The Child Song was written in 1983. I was busking in Newport (S.Wales) in the square when a little girl (about one and a half- two years old) came by with her mum. The child wanted to see a little bit of life in the opposite direction to the way mum was going and so ( through frustration and a short fuse) she smacked the girl quite soundly. I immediately started singing this song just ad libbing and singing to the mother almost talking to her through the song. At the end of the song she came over to me and with tears in her eyes she put a quid in the case and then walked off clutching her daughter. The effect on me was quite staggering as it kicked my career into space. With that kind of effect who needed a record deal when I could entertain and help at grass roots level.
Lyrics
To Watch a new born child smile at the sun
To watch the world go by with everyone
To watch the grass grow day by day
To watch the whole damned world go its own sweet way
You watch the sunrise
You watch it set
you watch the sunrise
And yet...
You stand there hands on your heart
You say that the whole damned world is coming apart
You watch the stars in the sky shine up above
Look for the answers together in your love
And watch the sunrise
Just watch it set
Just watch the sunrise
And yet...
You still stand there hands in your hair
hoping the world out side could really care
you watch the grass grow under your feet
And you smile and all the faces of those that you meet
And you watch the sunrise
You watch it set
You watch the sunrise
And yet...
You still stand there tears in your eyes
You hold the vision of a clear sunrise
You know that the pain will fade away
And joy will return day by day
If you watch the sunrise
If you watch it set
Just watch the sunrise
And yet...
Can you tell me, honestly what it,s like to be a child
Dancing in the sun, smiling at everyone
Can you tell me, honestly what it,s like to be a child
With a wild look in its eye
When I was three years old I used to talk to the trees
But as I grew up my mother taught me
About the birds and the bees
Tell me mother
Where did I go wrong
Tell me mother
Why I,m singing this song
Can you tell me honestly what it,s like to be a child
Dancing in the sun, smiling at everyone
Everydays a mystery, no day,s quite the same
When they,re in their secret gardens
Playing their magic games
Tell me honestly what it,s like to be a child
Dancing in the sun, smiling at everyone
Tell me honestly what it,s like to be a child
With a wild look in its eye
With a wild look in its eye
So can you tell me honestly what it,s like to be a child
dancing in the sun and smiling at everyone
Splashing through the puddles and playing in the park
Hiding under their bedclothes and giggling after dark
Tell me honestly what it,s like to be be a child
Dancing in the sun, smiling at everyone
Tell me honestly what it,s like to be a child
With a wild look in it,s eye
With a wild look in it,s eye
With a wild look in it,s eye.
