Story Behind the Song
My father used to live by sayings that he taught his kids, such as, "Good, better, best, never let it rest, 'til the good's better, and the better's best." While my father never said, "Better is a little bit got by right, than alot got a little bit wrong," it's a philosophy that he (and I) certainly try to live by, and it's a phrase that I thought could easily have come from my father (perhaps, in a way, it did).
Lyrics
"Little Bit"
I wish I were wealthy and lived on an island,
Far from the rat-race I'm livin' with here,
With plenty of friends who had plenty of money;
With plenty of parties and plenty of beer.
Still, I've got enough of everything I need,
'Cuz my daddy taught me how to get along.
He said, "Better is a little bit got by right,
Than alot got a little bit wrong."
He said, "Better is a little bit got by right,
Yeah, it's better a lot got a little bit wrong."
He said, "Better is a little bit got by right,
Than a lot got a little bit wrong."
Wish I could pay people to clean up my houses;
Wish I could pay people to drive me around.
But, I've gotta wonder where payment will come from
To cover the cost of the things that I've found.
Still, I've got enough of everything I need,
'Cuz my daddy taught me how to get along.
He said, "Better is a little bit got by right,
Than alot got a little bit wrong."
I had a gig at the Lake Mead Marina.
And, playin' is better than workin' by far.
Thought I'd never find any grass that was greener.
I'm not one for hitchin' my dream to a star.
I've played alot of tunes and I wrote alot of words,
'Though I never had a hit with a song,
Singin', "Better is a little bit got by right,
Than alot got a little bit wrong."
I say, "Better is a little bit."
I say, "Better is a little bit got by right."
I say, "It's better than alot."
I say, "It's better than alot got a little bit wrong.
I say, "Better is a little bit got by right,
Yeah, it's better a lot got a little bit wrong."
I say, "Better is a little bit got by right,
Than a lot got a little bit wrong."
