Lyrics
HAVE MERCY
VERSE 1
There is a man in the barroom today,
Who thinks that he's drinkin' his problems away;
He blames them on others, Lord, it's nothin' he did;
He curses his boss, his wife and his kid.
He swears that he's always tried hard as he could
To live purely, upright, honest and good;
He claims fate's just dealt him an unlucky hand,
As he opens the top of another beer can.
REFRAIN
Have mercy! Lord, have mercy on one's such as these;
They just do as they please.
Have mercy! And help them to see the way out
From within their disease.
VERSE 2
Down at the office a shrewd businessman
Has his ledger in front of him, pencil in hand;
He's makin' his books "work", schemin' a plan
To bring home more profit and cheat Uncle Sam.
He attends church each Sunday with his wife and his kid;
When the off'ring plate's passed none can see what he's hid;
No, they see he appears to be most generous,
Yet, when he cheated the taxman, he robbed all of us.
REFRAIN
Have mercy! Lord, have mercy on one's such as these;
They just do as they please.
Have mercy! And help them to see the way up
Is down on their knees.
VERSE 3
There's even a teacher in Sunday school,
Who's tryin' to teach others the Golden Rule;
Yet, at home with his fam'ly, Lord, he treats 'em so cruel,
As he's yellin', professin' that he is God's tool.
And there is a man, Lord, who thinks he is free
To find specks in his neighbor's eye, but he can't see,
For there's a log in his own eye that's big as a tree!
Have mercy! Dear Lord, have mercy on me!
REFRAIN
Have mercy! Lord, have mercy on one's such as these.
We need mercy from thee!
Have mercy! Lord, have mercy on one's such as these.
And have mercy on me!
