Story Behind the Song
Happened on the "go see" trip back to my hometown of Chicago in October. Although
I wasn't moving for a couple of months, I was missing Texas already. The
first line was written driving into Northeast Texas where the trees actually
change to warm reds and golds in the fall. "The trees look warmer the
farther north you drive..." The lyrics were written on the 18 hour drive from
Houston to Chicago. Although the music was in my head the whole time,
technically, I didn't get to the actual music until the next morning. By noon,
the song was done
Lyrics
The trees look warmer the farther north you drive.
But, the air grows colder.
Even nature's a compromise.
I know it's time to leave that big Lone Star behind.
But the road ahead gets blurry.
I've got too much Texas in my eyes.
I'm a northern native, but my music's Texas born.
Chicago is my past and future.
Still my heart is torn.
Don't know what I'll sing tomorrow as I head up Lake Shore Drive.
'Cause the road ahead is blurry.
I've got too much Texas in my eyes.
The sun is right behind me as I cross Arkansas.
Blinds my rearview mirror.
So I can't see what is gone.
These years in Houston made for memories that bind.
And the road ahead gets blurry.
I've got too much Texas in my eyes.
BRIDGE
Follow the music.
Follow the man.
Follow my heart.
I know Lone Star understands.
VERSE INSTRUMENTAL
A crescent moon rises as I hit Illinois.
My soul's a mix of tears and laughter,
Sadness and joy.
I hear Lone Star singing a sweet bayou lullaby.
And the road ahead gets blurry.
I've got too much Texas in my eyes.
The road ahead gets blurry.
I've got too much Texas in my eyes
