    Story Behind the Song
This song is based on composties of my Grandpa Joe and a character out of book about life in Rural Nothern New Mexico. The book is River of Traps and the character is Jacobo. I remember reading it and when Jacobo dies I actually wept. It was powerful. This song won "Best Folk Song" in the 2002 New Mexico Music Awards. It is rythmic kind of like a Kalimba or thumb piano song. The melody floats on top and I used a vibrato for my guitar. I play a Gibson E335 through a JC-120 amp. I went direct, but would like to record it again miking the amp. Not easy to do in a small space though.

    Lyrics

    This Old Man
This old man I know (1st verse)
    He knows the Earth
    He watches the sky
    They call him Jacobo
    This old man I know
    Lives in an Airstream Trailer
    Circa 1959
How it shined in its time
    Now it’s just old

And this old man says (chorus)
Things are usually what they seem
The only time you’re truly free
    Is when you dream
    What good are fireflies
If their fire can’t be seen
    You gotta shine so bright
    Even shadows can’t be seen
    That’s what I mean

This old man I know (2nd verse)
    Leans to the left
Walks with a cane he made
    From and old Willow
And this old man I know
    Lives with his dogs
    Says his life is complete
    Yeah he makes everything grow

And this old man says (chorus)
Things are usually what they seem
The only time you’re truly free
    Is when you dream
    What good are fireflies
If their fire can’t be seen
    You gotta shine so bright
    Even shadows can’t be seen
    That’s what I mean

This old man I know (3rd verse)
    Moves kinda slow
    But his eyes still glow
    My friend Jacobo
And this old man I know
    He died all alone
    With his dogs at home
The poorest Prince I’ve ever known
Now he’s truly free to roam
