Story Behind the Song
Written in memory of nights spent driving the
Coast Highway near Los Angeles under the influence of various things (only some of them chemicals).
Recorded one piece at a time as overdubs, but the end result is a lot like we did it live.
Lyrics
West coast highway is cold in the dark of night.
You could walk for miles and never see a single light.
Lay me down by a railroad track
With a bed of weeds for my aching back;
I've got rock-hard, stone-cold seacliff wind morning blues.
Wake in the morning with the sun throwing light off the sea
And the wind blowing cold salt water all over me.
Rocks spread the waves out in fans of lace,
But even though it's a beautiful place
I've got rock-hard stone-cold seacliff wind morning blues.
Now San Francisco is 200 miles or more.
I'd like to lay me down forever by the ocean shore,
Stretch right out on that railroad track,
Let that train roll by and just scratch my back.
I've got rock-hard stone-cold seacliff wind morning blues.
