A love song written during war
CD: solitaire   Label: Clever Sheep Records

    Story Behind the Song
    The story goes like this:

A young boy and a young girl meet during highschool, fall in love and become sweethearts. They stay together, off and on, through college. As with most young couples, they have their disagreements but always come back together. Then they have "the big fight" and break up. Before either has a chance to reconcile, the young man is called up to fight during the Gulf War and is shipped overseas. This song is the result of a letter the young lady receives from him.

    Lyrics
    Hello my love
It's strangely silent where I am
As I write myself to sleep
The sound of sirens in the air
    Is finally growing dim
And the planes have stopped their sweeps
    But it's just for now
    We'll break that silence soon
As our cycle of destruction starts anew
And if they call for volunteers
To take those early morning flights
Well you know I'd be The First To Go

    You and I had doubts
'Bout whether coming here was right
I never got the chance to choose
    But in the aftermath
    Of our forgotten fight
I swore that I had nothing left to lose
    But it don't matter now
Our beliefs won't keep us strong
Got to convince myself that what I've done is right
So if they call for volunteers
To lead some troops across the ground
Well you know I'd be The First To Go

    Saw you on the newsreel
You were knee-deep in the snow
    Carrying my peace sign crying
    "Send my lover home!"
    Lost you in the tears
From never knowing how you felt
When they said I'd be The First To Go

    It's knowing that you're there
And you've forgiven what I've done
That's given me the strength to carry on
I'll fall into your warm embrace
    When this war is won
Marvel at the colors of the setting sun
    But I can't right now
So I'll keep my dream for you
Of the happiness we'll bring into the world
And if they call for volunteers
To ride that plane back home to you
Well you know I'd be The First To Go
Yes you know I'd be The First To Go
