Story Behind the Song
I wanted to write a song about getting older and the influence that women have on us. It seems that in all sorts of stages of development there is an influential girlfriend, wife, or whatever...
It's my first attempt at writing a song that explains something using a parallel. Here, I use country dancing to explain the need that we have for a partner... and sometimes a good woman to take the lead for a while.
Lyrics
As a good boy I could always rely on,
Going dancin' on Tuesdays with the neighbors kid.
She was 14, just a coulple years older.
She could teach me to line dance, and a few other things.
Cause lonely little cowboys,
They need a good lead.
I got older, just a couple years older,
And that good little woman, she kept me in line,
Through the fast songs, when the nights were just too long,
Whether I was right or wrong she'd do it every time.
Cause lonely little cowboys,
They need a good lead.
-
I could dance like, I could dance like the wind then,
Watch my boots move across the bar room floor like a whirlwind fire,
But I got older, just so many years older,
I can still move a little, and make it look damn good
But this lonely little cowboy needs a good lead
I can tell by all the hearts that you've broken
You're a force to be reckoned with till my dyin' day,
But you're my daughter, and little darlin' I still love you,
And the sweet things you say as we 2-step right across the floor.
Cause this lonely old cowboy still needs a good lead
So take care of those lonley little cowboys,
Cause they're gonna need you.
