Something I wrote about a girl I used to know.

    Lyrics
I got up from the floor to go answer the door
thinking maybe you'd gone through a phase
but the only thing there was a sad baby bear
that had found itself lost in the haze
so I picked up a lighter and began to set fire
to the papers that littered the room
    and tonight I am writing
    The Great American Novel
and I'm gonna make sure that it's all about you

We were walking the street and I stared at my feet
there was nothing worthwhile to say
the voice in my head saying everything's dead
so you might as well call it a day
So we said our goodbyes and you started to cry
but we knew that it had to be done
    and tonight I am writing
    The Great American Novel
and then after a while I'll pretend to have fun

Tell me a story and make sure that it's gory
I'll tell you my day in a year
there's no reason to fight 'cause I know that I'm right
and I'll whisper the truth in your ear

And the papers all took me to task
    for wearing a Halloween mask
saying what a disgrace that he won't show his face
should I tell them it's made out of glass

We walked in the park and we stayed until dark
and I told you I wished I was dead
I tried not to say what I said on that day
but the drugs had gone straight to my head
Now you're off on the farm and I'm losing my charm
and the world wants to swallow my soul
    and tonight I am writing
    The Great American Novel
and tomorrow I'm setting myself a new goal

They took up the plate and collected my fate
and they tell me that God is my friend
I can't help but smile at his eloquent style
but I don't have the faith to pretend

and the street corner prophet of doom
is dancing around in my room
singing "blessed is he who pretends to be free"
I hope that he leaves pretty soon

After all of this time I guess everything's fine
but I still think about you a lot
we just took it too fast but that's all in the past
and I'm glad for the time that we got
and I hope in the end that we'll end up as friends
    I know it'll happen someday
    and tonight I am writing
    The Great American Novel
and tomorrow I'm going to throw it away
