Story Behind the Song
I asked Simon for a number, and he said "62". That was the keyboard setting I used, and the chords just found themselves. Initially a jam, but gradually structure and lyrics evolved.
Always more than just a song, we experimented with windscreen wiper sounds and dialogue. In the studio we added static, radio excerpts, the shipping forecast, and the flute part from Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on Greensleeves". The frequency shift of vocals and guitar are like passing vehicles, and the bowed bass and bowed cymbals inject new and interesting sounds.
Lyrics
...two, three, are we rolling? OK...alright, OK, I think we're going to go now...
"i'm driving in the rain, just driving, driving in the rain, see the faces, smiling faces in the rain, i love the rain, driving in the rain, i'm driving in the rain, see the faces, smiling faces, in the rain, i love the rain, i'm driving in the rain, see the faces, smiling faces, see the faces in the rain, i love the rain, i'm driving in the rain, i love the rain, see the faces, smiling faces, see the faces in the rain, i love the rain, i'm driving in the rain, i love the rain, i'm driving, driving in the rain"
