    Story Behind the Song
In 1997 the band was nearing the end of a five-week run at Chilcoot Charlie's in Alaska. Dave was sitting at the bar feeling homesick, surrounded by several barflies who were looking into the bottom of their glasses. The sound system was playing Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On", and the collective alienation was palpable. Everyone seemed to be longing for a distant wife or girlfriend. So Dave went back to the band house and set out to write the Merle Haggard/George Harrison drinking song that never was.

    Lyrics
    Sitting in a crowded barroom
    Under a midnight sun
And all I can think of is your eyes of green
So now that the day is done
And I'm still here where we used to walk
With memories I think we both are closing our eyes to see
Well the world is getting colder
    Tomorrow we'll be older
    After four weeks away
There's only one thing to say
Pour me a shot or pour me a shoulder
So here's to the dog-eared picture of you
    My mind's drifting home again
But for now you'll find the rest of me
Deep inside a glass of courage
Because the world is getting colder
    Tomorrow we'll be older
    And the songbox keeps playing
"What's Goin' On, What's Goin' On"
Swaying on a stool in a whiskey pool
I ramble along about Scooby-Doo and Nietzsche
When the world is getting colder
    Tomorrow we'll be older
I'm taking a stand with a drink in my hand
Pour me a shot or pour me a shoulder
Well the world is getting colder
    Tomorrow we'll be older
We're just dots on a graph with the same epitaph
Pour me a shot or pour me a shoulder
