Story Behind the Song
It all started with that bass line, inspired by one too many New Order listenings (Peter Hook rules). Throw on a bass chorus pedal, add jangly guitars, several lyric rewrites, and somehow you end up with a New Order/janglypop song about beaches, ex-lovers and nostalgia. It always had an album-closer feel, and until the last minute was simply known as "Closing". Ian wrote the music for the chorus because Drew, who wrote the rest of the music, couldn't find anything to match the beauty of the rest of it.
Lyrics
I'm down at the beach, shovels, bottles and buckets
Knees sinking slow
Building in the sand a home for ex-lovers
In San Ysidro
Throw ourselves right into the ocean
Cough up on the shore
Spitting out salt and stacking dead soldiers
Waves would come and you would go
Watch everything we make
Wash out with the tide
As the water swallows the sun
Day drowns into night
We could stay here forever
Yeah, but not tonight
Not tonight
Sit at the bar, smokes, peanuts and pool cues
People that I don't know
Greeted again by all those old voices
Nowhere else to go
A memory well growing deeper and darker
Pulling me from below
Pour myself right into the bottom
Make myself at home
Everything we said
Echoes amplified
Thoughts again refused
Stale neon light
You were mine forever
Yeah, but not tonight
Not tonight
