Story Behind the Song
I was sitting in my bedroom playing random Husker Du tunes on my 12-string, took a smoke break, and then came back to the guitar with the bass riff in my head. Wrote the chords to go along with it in about 30 seconds, the chorus came about quickly too. When I brought it into rehearsal (as our first original song) I knew from the get-go it would be a loud electric driving, in-your-face "this is what we do" kind of song. And so it became the first song on our demo CD as well.
There is a version that shall remain in the vaults whereby we do our best to imitate CSN&Y on the chorus harmonies, as well as containing the wimpiest guitar known to man.
The lyrics are your typical "there is a problem with our relationship" story - nothing special but it did mean something to me at the time.
Full credits:
Isaac Adamson - bass
Drew Crumbaugh - electric guitars
Eric Gautschi - vocals
Sean Ramsey - drums and percussion
Ian Sethre - 12-string guitar
Produced by Todd Nall and Helium Derby, engineered by Todd Nall at NallWorks Chicago.
Lyrics
I can see that you're alone
I don't feel like this is home
I don't really want to stay
I just don't know what to say
(chorus)
Here we were and here we stood
A vision of our lives done good
A future that we'll never see
Divided by eternity
Here we are and here we come
And if we let it come undone
A future that we'll never know
Our hopes they come, our hopes they come and go
Why must it end up this way?
These things I've tried to keep at bay
It's not, it's not that I don't care
I just feel we're getting nowhere
Chorus x2
I can see that you're alone
Waiting by the telephone
You, you know that I won't call
I think we've known it all along
Chorus
