The Liberty Street Blues Project played in and around Ann Arbor Michigan with various rosters from 1996-1999. The most successful lineup recorded a live gig on 2/22/1997 in Ann Arbor and this song is from that gig. Singer Matt Highland sat down to take a break and the rest of the band members played this instrumental jam. Check out the ferocious stratocater guitar of teen-age Danny Pratt, plus the tight rhythym section of bassist R.K. and drummer Kevin Logerquist. This song highlighted Danny Pratt's electrifying guitar playing, which brings back memories of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. Click on the song title for detailed notes about the recording. Story Behind the Song
DIGITALLY RE-MASTERED from original Tascam 424 analog tapes recorded on 2/22/1997. The Liberty Street Blues Project typically had a general structure for a song but many songs were largely improvised or played by feel (we never used sheet music). This song is no exception. While singer Matt Highland sat down to have a beer, the rest of the band went into this instrumental jam which captures the live feel of the band, especially Danny Pratt's (a teenager at the time) killer Stratocaster guitar playing. Check out the tight drum beats of Kevin Logerquist on his digital Roland drum set (a rarity, since almost all other gigs Kevin played a conventional Tama kit, but for this gig the digital set made recording easier). Kevin's years of drum training and jamming are apparent in his solid fills, rock solid groove, and small touches like his cymbal accents at 2:35 and 2:37 into the track. Bassist Ron Kim holds down the fort on his Rickenbacker 4001, providing turnaround notes to keep people in synch on the song structure (you can hear him playing the 2-3 second turnaround many times in the song- at 0:59, 1:20, 1:54, 2:15, 2:35 in the track). Guitarist Danny Pratt unleashes his Fender Stratocaster in an unscripted, improvised jam. From the big chorus (the first time you hear it is at 0:31 into the track) to some killer double stops (0:59 in the track) to some other killer guitar work (check out the big chord at 1:40, and the notes he fires off at 3:09, 3:11, and 3:28). Dan also shows his ability for dynamics, going into low volume mode at 2:01, building into louder dynamics at around 2:30. The impromptu nature of this recording really captured the spirit of the band's live gigs. Technical Notes: Dan's guitar track was inadvertenly not recorded on his own track, so what you're hearing is his guitar recorded through the vocalist's microphone which was a few feet from Danny's guitar amp. The vocalist was sitting down having a beer at the time, good thing he left his mike on or we wouldn't have this recording!
