Story Behind the Song
This song was written in 1984 and recorded in a 24 track studio the following year. Interesting that the writer almost prophesied the explosion of the internet, doing 'cyber' and so on. I had no idea at the time that 17 years later the song would have more contemporary relevence than it did when it was just a metaphor for telling one's girlfriend to leave one alone.
Lyrics
Nameless faces, meaningless numbers, are the same, they are one,
Hide behind deadbolted doors, put the world on ignore.
I'm just a number, my wallet says so, ask me anything, it all adds up.
I'm just a jumble hopelessly scrambled, there ain't no-one who can keep up.
There ain't no sense & to make amends I'm throwing out my calculator chips,
Take me out of your read only memory,
Erase the disk, and let me live,
Erase the disk, and let me live.
One day, sex will be done by, networking our terminals dear.
Punch the key, see if you've cum yet, it's so nice to have you near.
Come with me I'll turn on your modem, electrically we'll burn up the lines,
a hacker's dream to peek at our lives dear,
The numbers add up and we're doing fine.
There ain't no sense & to make amends I'm throwing out my calculator chips,
Take me out of your read only memory,
Seal it up and send it right back to me,
Erase the disk, and let me live,
Erase the disk, and let me live.
