    Lyrics
    The Mullet Man

Wayland Shannon was the Mullet Man
He fished every day that he could
With a long gill net and his own bare hands
And a little leaky boat of wood
People called him the Mullet Man
From their big homes along the shore
They would look down their nose
    And say ‘there he goes’
You better check the lock on the door
    Refrain:
Hear that sound, that’s the Mullet Man
The putt putt coming down the Sound
    He’s got fresh Speckled Trout
    and Mullet no doubt
And he’ll sell ‘em when he comes around
The poor folks sure loved the Mullet Man
More than the free fish he’d bring
    To their tar paper shacks
He would meet ‘em out back
To Shannon they were the kings
Thirty years pulling the long net
What does it avail a man
    Gnarled leathered hands
    Cancer on the skin
    And no retirement plan
    Refrain
The fish are all gone said the Mullet Man
    Pollution done chased ‘em away
    The crabs are too small
And the gulls they don’t call
But he kept searching day after day
If you ever go down to the Gulf Coast
    Down around Santa Rosa Sound
Listen closely for the Mullet Man
‘Cause his spirit just might be around
    Refrain
