Story Behind the Song
Was living extremes early on a Sunday morning - and paying the consequences. Song is happy exhortation about extremes and negatives they will bring - if carried out.
Song was written over 5 days, accoustic & vocal on the front porch swing. Just a few takes to record with "the band", all vocal tracks thrown down while the kids were out-of-the-house for one hour -- didn't want to "lose" that rough feel (ha!-wish we had more time!).
Lyrics
If I Never, Always, Sometimes (Copyright 2001 Boyd) (Words & Music Boyd)
I, I, I, I, I, I, I-I
Me, me, me, me, me, me, me…
If I always stayed awake,
My eyes would grow weary, my mind levitate
Until I got sick, passed-out, that’s my fate
Well I think it’s time to take a nap
If I sometimes get too high,
That I don’t want your company, then I’ll try
To share my stash more with, all of my friends
How come smokes become a selfish thing??
Yeh, it used to be a sharing thing.
(Chorus) Let’s make the rules up now as we go along…
If we trip and fall, well there’s nothing that’s wrong
Just for a moment why not live for today?
And don’t expect mercy if you get in my way…
If there was never, ever a God,
then I’d rape and pillage, And just stay high,
You couldn’t tell me, right from wrong
And I’d laugh while crushing out your life (a-ha!)
There’s no need to rise above this strife
(Bridge) If I always, If I sometimes, If I never, do think I’m so Clever…
If I want to lay with you,
I’d make up the words, that you think are true
A “caring,” “thoughtful” person, touch away your blues
Well I think about you every day
Wouldn’t have it any other way
If I Always, If I Never, If I often think I’m clever
If I Sometimes if I Never, If I sometimes, If I Sometimes,
If I never? Never.
