Story Behind the Song
Inspired by the 1995 Republican assault on environmental protection in favor of zero regulation of big business, enabling polluters to dump wastes with impunity. I wrote it on the way to work in 20 minutes. The band first recorded this during a concert debut on Earth Day, April 22, 1996. The posted version was recorded during our April 22, 2002 concert. As it was done live, the recording was done in one take.

LEAD JUNK
(Sung to the tune of "Dead Skunk" by Loudon Wainwright III)
Parody lyrics by Bill Tong
Performed by The Earth Tones Band
(Instrumental intro)
The fly dumpers come out late at night.
We should have looked left and we should have looked right.
We didn't that they would go so far.
The waste got dumped, and there you are...
You see the lead junk in the middle of the field?
Lead junk in the middle of the field!
Lead junk in the middle of the field!
Stinking to high heaven!
(Instrumental break)
Take a whiff - watch out! - you'll burn your nose.
Breathe from a tank, and through a hose.
If you try to look, there's not much to see,
Except the smoke belching from an old factory.
You see the lead junk in the middle of the field?
Lead junk in the middle of the field!
Lead junk in the middle of the field!
Stinking to high heaven. (Man, it stinks!)
(Fiddle break)
(The high part:)
Well you got leaky landfills, you got PCB.
All the sewer pipes are toxic as can be.
Got your dead critters, and your deformed fish.
Stopping polluters really is our wish,
You see the... lead junk... in the middle...
Lead junk in the middle of the field.
Lead junk in the middle of the field,
Stinking to high heaven!
