Song for my Elder, Aunt Carol |
|
Story Behind the Song
This song was inspired by my experiences growing up and looking in the mirror. I used to wonder who I was. There is a well known Native Flute song called "Who am I," I used to ask myself that all the time. That's the beginning, the sad, lamentful part of the song. It was my Elder, Aunt Carol who explained the words I needed to express what I was feeling during the middle of the song- strength and self worth, loud, powerful. But the song ends with a sad, lamentful cry as I realize how many people will never hear those words, how many people will never be able to look into the mirror and say "I am I."
