Story Behind the Song
Based on events at a Portland, OR strip club. Molly was a particularly engaging performer. Song describes the ways in which club patrons view the dancers, either trash or saints. Also touches upon our insecurities as " shy, unappealing" men in a room of beautiful women. Written in August 1997, recorded some thereafter. Final version recorded in March 1999 after multiple tweakings.
Lyrics
I saw her standin' by the window
wondered if she'd share a beer
Tryin' hard to hide my motives
and kinda scared she'll smell the fear
Now she's dancin' like a demon
fulfillin' dreams for me and you
She's my darlin' or your lovely
It only costs a dollar or two
(Watchin' Molly Oh, by golly)
Sittin' pretty on a barstool
I wonder if she'll stay a while,
and order up a gin and tonic
She pulls me in with skin and smile
But I am shy and unappealing
and she is all that men yearn for
She can be my Saint Theresa
or she can be a two-bit whore
(Watchin' Molly Oh, by golly)
