Story Behind the Song
I wrote this in the summer of 2001, one of the first songs I had written that I actually liked enough. I wrote this about someone who had broken up with me, but we both really knew it was for the best.
The arrangement itself was originally supposed to be me and my trusty guitar, but, inspired by a Goo Goo Dolls favorite, turned to include some percussion and an organ. If you really care to hear how good I am at ripping off other ideas (or as I like to put it, to learn where my inspirations come from), look for a copy of the Goo Goo Dolls' retrospective album, "What I Learned About Ego, Opinion, Art And Commerce." (Warner Records, 2001.)

Lyrics
the rain is pouring down
reminding me of the way we danced
and your eyes in the sun
glittering across the riverbank
I think that you and I
never gave ourselves a second chance
now the time has come for the questions
and the answers we'll have to hear
we wanna make the right decisions
but what we need is so clear
when the snow's drifting down
and a white blanket covers us all
we look for each other
but I can't hear your forgotten calls
whatever happens between us
I want you to know to have no fear
we know our judgements have been clouded
but what we need is so clear
though I know what I want
I know that I cannot have you near
so I'll give you your space
'cause what we need is so clear
