There's something about being trapped with no electricity that really strains the cracks in a shaky relationship.

    Story Behind the Song
I was stuck in my apartment for several days without electricity and I began to wonder: What if you were stuck under these annoying conditions with someone you only used to love?

    Lyrics
The finger of the gods moved through our town today
Picked up the trees and it yanked them all away
Knocked down the fences and it scared us half to death
    The day the tornado came

An hour ago, you ran out of cigarettes
Now you're drumming your fingers on the table
And me I tense my shoulders for the fight
    Over you getting another pack

There is so little left to say
But we keep on trying to say it
Trying to find yet another way
To beat this big, dead horse

I try to avoid the obvious metaphor
    Electricity that's lost its spark
No hot water, no washing machine
Only candles to light this darkness

Now I am spinning my ring on the tabletop
And you say you wish I would stop it
As you pour yourself another beer
    You've already had too many

What is the sound of a screen door slamming
What is the smell of love when it goes
What is the feeling when someone's choking
What is the point of one dead rose

This was the one that would last forever
This was the love that would end it all
Now all I do is dream of funerals
And I cannot bear this pall

The finger of the gods moved through our town today
Picked up our lives and it blew them both away
Knocked down defenses and it scared us half to death
    The day the tornado came.
